Alouette, gentille alouette

The new Montreal football team’s name was announced during a luncheon at the Club St-Denis (a meeting place of the French-Canadian elite)—it would be called the Alouettes. Hayman came up with this French name, which referenced an old song that was well-known even amongst Montreal Anglophones. Alouette was also the name of the French-Canadian 425th bomber squadron during the war.
